Acupuncture Q & A

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment involving the precise insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to treat pain, stiffness and other symptoms, as well as manage acute and chronic illness and disease. The needles stimulate the nervous system as well as circulation which help to stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities, providing pain relief and balance within the body. Acupuncture is a mainstay of Eastern and integrative medicine.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Traditionally, acupuncture is believed to stimulate acupuncture points to affect the flow of energy or qi (pronounced chee) in the body, ensuring balance between the yin and yang within a person. Modern research indicates that the placement of needles in specific spots on the body helps relieve pain and other issues by interrupting normal nerve signaling pathways, releasing painkilling brain chemicals, and promoting the body’s natural healing responses at and near the site of needle insertion.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture is not a painful treatment, in fact, most patients find the treatment relaxing. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin – much finer than those used for injections – and the treatment uses very shallow insertion points not far below the skin surface.

What Conditions Does Acupuncture Treat?

The practitioners at the Chiropractic Wellness Center use acupuncture to treat a variety of conditions ranging from back and neck pain to stress. The placement of the needles is highly customizable to ensure the patient receives treatment specific to his or her condition or injury. Some of the most common issues that can be addressed with acupuncture include:

  • Chronic and acute back and neck pain
  • Spine issues
  • Joint pain, including hip and shoulder pain
  • Nerve-related conditions
